How do I take a cheek swab? (dogs/cats)
How to take a cheek swab correctly
Swabbing a cat or dog is quick, painless, and safe.
The goal is to collect cheek cells, not saliva.
Step-by-Step
- Wash your hands before opening the sterile swab
- Insert the swab between the cheek and gum
- Rub firmly for 20-30 seconds
- Rotate to ensure full contact
- Place directly into the tube and seal
Firm pressure helps collect enough DNA
Common Swabbing Concerns
I dropped the swab on the floor. Is it OK?
In most cases, yes. Light contamination rarely causes issues.
My animal chewed the swab! Is it OK?
Probably! Chewing often results in plenty of cheek cell DNA.
My animal won't tolerate swabbing. Do you accept blood samples?
We only accept blood samples if:
- Taken by a vet
- At least 0.5mL whole blood
- Collected in an EDTA tube
We do not accept owner-collected blood spots under any circumstances due to ethical considerations.
If you're unsure about your sample, contact us with details.
