Which dog test do I need?
Choosing the right DNA test for your dog can feel overwhelming, especially if you're seeing terms like health testing, carrier, breed analysis, or parentage testing for the first time.
Here's a simple guide to help you decide.
If you're a pet owner who wants peace of mind
Choose a Health DNA Test. Our dog health testing packages are here.
Health testing screens for inherited genetic conditions known to affect your dog's breed. It tells you whether your dog is:
- Clear - no variant detected
- Carrier - carries one copy but unlikely to develop the condition
- At Risk - two copies detected (at risk of developing the condition)
This is ideal if you want to understand future health risks, or if your vet has recommended screening, or if you're planning ahead for long-term care.
We've put together packages of tests for specific breeds on our website. If we have a health DNA test for your dog's breed then it will appear when you search for the breed on the website.
If you want to know your dog's breed makeup
Choose a Breed DNA Test. Our dog breed identification test is here.
This identifies your dog's breed composition and ancestry. It's especially popular for crossbreeds or rescue dogs.
You'll receive:
- Breed breakdown percentages
- A downloadable test certificate
If you want to predict the coat colours of a litter of puppies
Choose a Colour DNA Test. Our dog coat colour panel is here.
Coat colour testing can be rather complicated so if you're unsure which specific coat colour tests to order we recommend ordering the Comprehensive Coat Colour Panel, which contains all the tests needed to see the full picture.
If you want to predict the colours of a litter of puppies you will need to order a colour panel for the dam and the sire.
Still unsure?
If you're between two options, ask yourself:
Are you testing for health risks, puppy colours, or breed composition.
If you're still not certain, you can contact our support team and we'll help you choose, no pressure just guidance. We want you to choose the right test from the start to prevent any issues later.
